Project
Passage
The staring point for this project is the shopping arcade, defined as a place for a (more or less covered) area where many shops are located. The project partners Galerie Münsterland e.V and AkkuH (Aktuele Kunst Hengelo), build a cross-border passage from Emsdetten, via Gronau and Losser to Hengelo by means of temporary “interventions”. The passage is open from 19 February till 19 March 2011.
If people look at these places and observe closely, they will notice that city dwellers make use of these passages in their daily lives without really stopping to reflect on the question of what this passage actually means to them. Passages are never just functional. They always leave something open. In the “space between”, art intervenes and discovers the passage as a location where wishes and dreams can be portrayed. Even though it’s only for a short while, the fact that they are there now gives us hope that such artistic interventions will continually pop up somewhere and enliven our everyday lives.
Participating artists
Elaine Vis (elainevis.nl) will transform the Rathauspassage in Emsdetten into a lively biotope, a Dutch-German border landscape, where birds twitter and people sing cheerful songs.
Gronau: Kurt-Schumacher-Platz/Marktweg - Moritz Ebinger (moritzebinger-artprize.nl) is fascinated by the history of the four participating towns, making paintings of them and not only exhibiting them in the shop windows, but extending these paintings through drawings with buttermilk on the glass of the shop windows and with a high-pressure hose on the asphalt.
For the multi-cornered passage in Losser, Tina Tonagel (tinatonagel.de) develops an escape route exhibition. What would seem at first sight to be a call to leave the passage as quickly as possible, reveals – on closer inspection – a story about escape routes from other locations.
Hengelo: Lambertuspassage - Max Sudhues (maxsudhues.de) transforms the passage into a solar system. The lamps that have hung inconspicuously for years on the ceiling of the passage now represent the planets. The sun, Mercury, Venus, the earth, Jupiter, etc. illuminate the passage as a scientific model in Hengelo.
Opening:
The Passage Emsdetten-Gronau-Losser-Hengelo will be opened on 19 February.
The start is at 12.00 in Emsdetten, 13.45 in Gronau, 14.45 in Losser and at 16.00 in Hengelo.
