Project
Birds and clouds
Art on an airfield for model airplanes? On July 2nd from 15.00, the airspace above the MSC Bad Bentheim airstrip will be transformed into a stage – for a model airplane performance. The art project birds and clouds from one life to another has been created by the Australian-German artist duo Sylvia Schwenk and Nikola Dicke.
They were inspired by the poem Die Liebenden (The Lovers) by Bertold Brecht in which the main role is played by a swarm of cranes. Which is why flying plays a key role in the performance. A group of German and Dutch ‘pilots’ fly their model airplanes to a choreography of music specially composed for this performance by the Australian musician Barry Evans.
The pilots have been individually practising the manoeuvres that imitate the flight formations of swarms of birds. On July 2nd, they will fly the whole choreography together for the first time, to the composition of The Lovers. And they will meet each other not only during the flight choreography, but throughout the day, so that together they will create something and then leave each other at the end. Just as in Brecht’s poem.
This way, art becomes a moving medium connecting everybody for a short period. Following the performance, the spectators will be invited to make small Origami crane mobiles and sculptures from large sheets of paper. The party will be concluded with a barbecue, where it won’t only be the borders between art and sport that will be overcome.
