Grenze/Grens... to be expired... to be remembered

Political borders play a key role In the personal biography of the Zagreb-born Kristina Leko. It seems therefore natural that the theme of Borders also features prominently in her work. The focus of her work lies however on stories about traditions, which are gradually disappearing.

Onhoudbaar! - valse geschiedenis

Perishable! - False History

Borders and professions that have disappeared or are in the process of disappearing are visualised and analysed in more detail. Personal stories are recalled and compared with similar tales from the other side of the border and are upgraded through the association of the artists. The floating ear

How sustainable are borders? How do we distinguish between what is private and what is public? How do boundaries get shifted? It’s safe to say that new technologies play a crucial role here, resulting in an increasing demand for cameras, search engines, drones, etc. However, the usefulness and relevance of all this massive amount of data is short-lived. Altersgrenze

Do dreams and desires have a sell by date? Are fears ‘good till at least…’, or do they expire after a certain age limit has passed? How long can you keep dreams? The temporary installation entitled Altersgrenze visualises these existential feelings and their perishability during the course of someone’s life through the use of direction signs and texts placed on them. These direction signs are situated in the Netherlands and Germany on the side of the road and cross each other by the border.

The project created by Kim Habers and Seppe Ovink(in collaboration with Sebas van Olst) is a performance, sculpture and film all rolled into one. The point of departure is the various characteristics of the Euregional cities of Zwolle (NL) and Rheine (D). How do cities come into being, especially their buildings? And what is precisely the difference between public and private spaces, how city dwellers behave, and the skylines and their demise? The two artists attempt to answer these questions – via a white glass cube that they place in public spaces and in which they portray the rise and fall of a city.
